Alas

The pictures in Thursday's blog postwere of Pismo Beach, where we went over the weekend. Alas, I forgot to bring my camera so I didn't take any photos. But suffice it to say, Pismo Beach is an interesting place. A collision of worlds to be sure. SUV's rolling down the sand and a huge amount of ATV rentals are a counterpoint to the beautiful beach, rolling hills and bluffs. The best mental photo I... Read more

Hong Kong 1968

A coworker shared this film with me that was shot and developed in my hometown of Hong Kong back in 1968.  It was then digitized in the modern day and set to music.  Pretty cool to see that some things have changed but some things haven't.... especially if you've been recently.Hong Kong 68 from impactist on Vimeo.2006.Field Trip Series: Hong Kong 68.Audio Track: "Cubby Hole" ImpactistAll content... Swiss Family Hotel

When I'm on the road for work I spend a lot of time reading in-flight magazines, travel publications and other various glossy periodicals. One thing I've noticed that keeps cropping up lately is the idea of tree house hotels. Perhaps it's the whole green eco-tourism movement that has given rise to the idea of literal tree-hugging, or maybe it's just the next obvious step after ice hotels,... Read more

The White City

So on Sunday, Scott decided to dust off our copy of Take A Hike Los Angelesand pick out a local hike for us to take. We woke up on the late side so our hike didn't start until about 12:30. But we were prepared. Slathered in sunscreen, with two large Nalgene's full of water, we drove the 15 minutes to the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains (just a 10-15 minute drive to Altadena) and began the... Choppity Chop!

Today was a both a happy and sad day in the Ahnert Davis household.  We had to say goodbye to our beloved shady Mulberry tree.  If you recall, it got quite the haircut last fall when we moved in - not much shade to be seen. But apparently, as Mulberries do, it didn't seem to mind and over the summer it let out its locks and became quite the shade source.... which was welcome in the recent heat.Thi... Honey I shrunk the kids

Either that or I blew up the coat rack...  I saw this pic recently on Design Is Mine.  At first I thought the perspective was just messing with me but indeed it's a super-sized version of Eames Hang-It-All coatrack! Read more

Up, Down, and Around

Recently, my dad forwarded me an article from the New York Times about the newly opened D'Espresso Coffee Bar near Bryant Park's New York Public Library. The designer Anurag Nema took the idea of the traditional library and turned it on end, creating custom printed ceramic floor tiles with a bookshelf image and putting the floor and ceiling on what are actually the walls.photo courtesy of New York...
