A few weeks ago, I went down a deep rabbit hole searching for the perfect bag. What started as a quest to find something for a gift guide quickly turned into a personal mission when I realized I had a need to fill too. If you were following along on instagram (@atelier_davis), you know it was quite the journey!
The Criteria
I needed a bag that could fit a laptop and work well for travel but still felt cool — more like a purse than a utility bag, briefcase, or standard laptop carrier. Since it had to double as a travel companion, an open top was out of the question, and while interior compartments weren’t a must-have, they’d be a nice bonus. A crossbody strap for easy toting was also essential.
As a designer, I wanted something timeless but with a touch of edge. In other words, I wanted to avoid the look of a corporate commuter hauling pumps in a tote while sporting white sneakers with a skirt suit. That’s just not me. Here’s what I considered:
The Contenders

I love that this bag offers two carrying options. The checkered pattern is playful and fun, but I’m not thrilled that the strap isn’t detachable or replaceable.

The charms are adorable and unique, but I’m on the fence about the shape. Does it lean a little too corporate?

This bag’s simplicity and chicness are a huge draw for me. Unfortunately, the $1,800 price tag feels like a bit too much of a splurge.

This tote came highly recommended — it has a detachable strap and a zipper closure, which checks a lot of boxes. But I’m not really a camo person, and $700 for a canvas bag gives me pause.

I like the sleek design of this shopper, but the magnetic closure makes me nervous — it’s just not secure enough for travel.

The silver finish on this bag is super fun, and it seems practical enough to fit the bill. It’s an eye-catching option that manages to feel both edgy and versatile.

If I were in the market for a bucket bag, this would be a strong contender. It’s charming but not the most practical choice for my needs.

And who doesn’t love googly eyes? That said, I’m not completely sold on nylon — it doesn’t quite have the look or feel I want.

I adore the playful, unconventional shape of this bag. My only hesitation is whether it would maintain its structure with a laptop inside.

Woven leather is always a favorite of mine, but the thin strap makes me worry about shoulder discomfort during long days.

I think I’ve found the one! This bag feels like the perfect combination of function and style. I’ll be adding some charms to make it my own — stay tuned for updates on the final touches!
The Verdict
After much deliberation, I’ve landed on the Opelle Vanda Bag. It checks all my boxes — practical, stylish, and just the right amount of edge. Now, I’m looking forward to personalizing it with some fun charms and a detachable strap. The search may have taken longer than expected, but it was worth it!
