Our past couple of Moodboard Mondays have featured the first-round design schemes for our latest local project: a beautiful home for a young couple. We kicked things off in the entryway and then moved into the dining room, both of which set a sophisticated tone for the rest of the house.

Today, we are thrilled to share two preliminary design schemes for “The Library” (or “The Study”).

Designing a Hybrid Social-Workspace

Our clients wanted this space to be a true hybrid room. It needs to function as a productive workspace for video calls, but also serve as a cozy retreat for reading a book or enjoying a conversation with guests.

To maximize the square footage, our clients had a simple yet brilliant request: incorporate a stylish sleeper sofa so the room can seamlessly double as an extra guest bedroom when needed.

To bring this vision to life, we developed two distinct design schemes. Both concepts lean into an eclectic, upscale, and transitional interior design style.

The Secret Ingredient: Seamless Millwork

No matter which direction our clients choose, both schemes will feature custom, library-style shelving. To create a cohesive, high-end look, this custom millwork will be painted the exact same color as the walls, making it feel like an original architectural feature of the home.

Scheme 1: Bright, Sophisticated, & Transitional

Clockwise from Top Left: Lay Natural Woven Wood Shades from Two Pages, Louise Pendant from Hudson Valley Lighting, Brewster Grey paint from Benjamin Moore, Mid-Century Brass Sconce from Etsy, Pixie End Table by Four Hands, Topanga Swivel Chairs by Four Hands, Hirsh Hand-Knotted Wool Rug from Lulu & Georgia, Yokosuka Side Table by Noir Furniture, Ceva Sleeper Sofa from CB2, Everywhere Velvet Pillow from Pottery Barn, Alora Solid Wood and Marble Side Table from West Elm, & Orion Bronze Table Lamp from Port 68.

The first design scheme leans a little brighter, while the wall color will still create a moody, encompassing vibe. We’ve introduced subtle pops of color through accents while keeping the large-scale furnishings neutral. It’s perfect for a crisp, inviting workspace that still feels relaxed for evening reading.

Scheme 2: Moody, Vibrant, & Eclectic

Clockwise from Top Left: Quince Solid Wood Side Table from West Elm, Hale Navy paint from Benjamin Moore, Cynara Chandelier from Visual Comfort, Barclay Swivel Chairs by Four Hands, Temari Fabric by Zak and Fox, Mondrian Picture Light from Pooky Lights, Small Dot Pattern by Charles and Ray Eames fabric from Maharam, Perspective by Paul Smith fabric from Maharam, Danzi Hand-Tufted Wool Rug from Lulu & Georgia, Shelter Daybed from West Elm, Mulligan Side Table by Noir Furniture, & Shiloh Floor Lamp from West Elm.

The second scheme takes a bolder approach. It features loud, vibrant textiles contrasted against a very moody, dark wall color. If you love a cozy, enveloping, “hidden gem” aesthetic, this version of the study is an absolute dream.
