We’re kicking off an exciting new project at Atelier Davis: a Pennsylvania boathouse designed for entertaining and laid-back lake living. Sitting alongside an adjacent main house, this retreat will be all about warmth, texture, and a seamless connection to its natural surroundings.
One of the first key decisions? Choosing the perfect exterior finishes. The right materials can set the tone for the entire space, and we’re exploring several options that each bring something special to the table. From rustic warmth to modern simplicity, our goal is to create a boathouse that feels both timeless and right at home by the water. Let’s dive into the possibilities!
The Vision
The exterior sets the tone for the entire space, so we’re exploring different approaches to wood cladding, each offering a distinct character:
- Weathered Warmth – A medium-toned wood that feels organic and timeless, echoing the surrounding trees and creating a welcoming presence.
- Sun-Washed Simplicity – Pale cladding that lends an airy, modern quality: bright, fresh, and perfectly suited for relaxed lake living.
- Charred Elegance – A dark, striking façade in the style of Shou Sugi Ban that adds depth and sophistication while providing a bold contrast.

What’s Next
As we refine the vision, we’re considering how each of these exterior styles complements the architecture and setting. No matter the direction, the goal remains the same: a modern yet timeless retreat that feels effortlessly at home by the lake. Stay tuned as we bring this vision to life!
